Betsy Ross was an American upholsterer who was credited in the writings of her grandson for making the first American Flag commissioned by General George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and two members of a congressional committee, in 1776.
Rosie the Riveter symbolizes the new role women took on during World War I and II. They filled the jobs of machine workers, mechanics, construction workers, heavy machine operators, and the like, that men typically held before the war.
